New Arrivals in the Webstore 10/18/18:
NIGHT BIRDS "Roll Credits" LP (Fat Wreck Chords)
It has been a decade since NIGHT BIRDS exploded onto the scene, resuscitating the surf-inspired '80s hardcore sound that fans continuously flock to. With a style akin to the likes of Adolescents, Germs, and Dead Kennedys, Night Birds bring an epileptic energy that defies the listener to sit still. Through three full-length albums the band continues to deliver their signature onslaught of throwback-meets-modern hardcore. As with their live show, this is prevalent on their latest mini-album Roll Credits. With the addition of original guitarist MIKE HUNCHBACK, their frenetic energy reaches a whole new level throughout Roll Credits’ eight tracks. By keeping the record concise, fans can expect this album to be a lean combination of the band’s best elements. From the propulsive, self-deprecating “Onward to Obscurity” (featuring guest vocals from POISON IDEA's JERRY A.) to the fantastically tongue-in-cheek “My Dad Is the BTK,” you won’t find a whiff of filler on this thing.
GELD "Soft Power" 7" (Iron Lung Records)
A nasty followup EP to the Perfect Texture LP released earlier this year finds GELD in a more irascible and unhinged state. Soft Power expands on the band's vision of a freer form of D-Beat with noisier sounds, tighter dimensions, wilder visions and subtler experimentation with carefully placed nuances. Don't be tricked into thinking this is some sort of hippy dippy jamband bullshit though, every second of this is cruelly calculated and executed with the utmost care. Damn. Housed in a custom ILR 80# felt weave glued pocket sleeve with insert and download code included. Recorded by Billy Gardener and Julian Cue. Art by Sam McKenzie.
C.H.E.W. "Feeding Frenzy" LP (Iron Lung Records)
Do you have unexplained scars on your body, piercing eyes, an unquenchable thirst for intricately relentless hardcore punk music, deep compassion for the fate of mankind, a notion toward punishment by stoning or the capability to disrupt electrical appliances? If so, Feeding Frenzy will be your audio guide to unlocking the delicate depths of this confusing planet. Though you may have a keen sense of not belonging to the human race, it will help you to blend in and go unnoticed so you can quietly further your agenda. Enable yourself. Housed in a 24pt jacket with a 4 panel poster insert and download card included. Recorded by Matt Russell, mixed by Russell
RATA NEGRA "Justicia Cósmica" LP (La Vida Es Un Mus)
Less than a year and a half after their debut RATA NEGRA from Madrid release their sophomore album. Made up of members from JUANITA Y LOS FEOS and LA URSS this trio have a strong work ethic and deal in super catchy and upbeat punk. On Justicia Cósmica, RATA NEGRA have upped the pop element in the songs and the production is stronger and chunky, without losing any of the raw elements. Again the whole sound is immersed in the darker and morbid side of post punk but mixed with the uptempo nature and tunes and of La's X and Gorilla Angreb. Like on their debut, it's love at first listen. Justicia Cósmica was recorded and produced by the legendary Paco Loco and as in previous releases the sleeve was designed by the band’s guitarist Fa Feo who also took care of the lyric insert.
ULTRA "Alta Montaña" LP (La Vida Es Un Mus)
Barcelona’s ULTRA finally found time to record their LP in between forced exiles, mountain retreats and relentless touring. Leaving behind a whole lotto touring and two EPs filled to the rim with short burst of hardcore punk energy, they managed to stay still long enough to compose and record their debut LP. This time around you can see they have had space, maybe even mental space, to put together an extremely well balanced and produced record. The wild riffing is still there so is the seamless rhythm section backing one of the most energetic voices in current hardcore punk. Perhaps the most noticeable changes are the delay vocals and the electronic segments and intros joining the 11 tracks together. Don’t worry, ULTRA is still an anti-authoritarian riff powerhouse but this time they are proving that you can keep one foot firmly pressed in the political hardcore scene while breaking free of music expectations.
SIAL "Binasa" 7" (La Vida Es Un Mus)
Following up on their fantastic 7-track 12” from last year, Singapore's SIAL is back with Binasa, a new 6-track 7" with a Malay title that translates to 'Perish'. Binasa sees the band pushing their cacophony of urgent and raw hardcore punk to the red. It takes cues from the likes of COMES, CONFUSE or LEBENDEN TOTEN but makes sure their ferocious sound and message doesn’t get lost in the noise. Their new release is a feast of ripping buzzsaw guitar, ferocious drumming and a vocalist spitting hate towards a racist, classist society that doesn't protect the interests of the marginalised. Recording this time around was done in their own collective studio space, Project 416 with Mastering done by Will Killingsworth and cover artwork by their drummer Izzad.
SUBDUED "4 Track EP" 7" (La Vida Es Un Mus)
Shaking you in and out of misery, Subdued is back. The hardened second release by London's Subdued throttles gasps of brickwall torture in and amongst the poison flora of spoken word which will legitimately make a mother cry. It nods to the impassable corners of Celtic Frost and the broken necks of enthusiastic Amebix fans, all with a listless stare into the white void of repetitive oblivion. The record comes in a wraparound sleeve with collaborative art between drummer Nicky Rat and singer Jack Sabbath.
CONSTANT MONGREL "Living in Excellence" LP (La Vida Es Un Mus)
After three years since their last release Constant Mongrel have developed a diverse collection of songs gradually over time. Recorded in the summer of 2017 in a studio, produced by Tom Hardisty and Mastered by Mikey Young, ‘Living In Excellence’ brings a more formed sound and aesthetic with striking riffs and catchy rolling bass over an often unhinged, vibrant rhythm section. Added for this on particular tracks is a fried, effected saxophone with warm synths and analogue sounds added to enhance the LP’s thoughtful textures. The new record has a sharper British Post Punk expression reminiscent of the usual suspects in Wire, Blitz, The Mob, Siekiera and The Fall, while also exploring elements found outside of the genre from Les Rallizes Dénudés to Youth Crew Hardcore to Country music and beyond, there's greater depth and sensibility found amongst the angst. James Vinciguerra (of Total Control fame) designed the cover which is a perfect depiction of this modern day punk record with its sharpness, colour and feeling of slight discomfort.
RAT CAGE "Blood on Your Boots" 7" (La Vida Es Un Mus) The Ratman is back with yet another dose of first-calibre hardcore. Taking cues from the golden age of International hardcore punk circa 83 and with eyes fixed on the late TOTALITÄR, this madman manages to write and record four new anthems, which follow the trail of destruction left by his first EP last year. Do not expect many changes, there is the same fixation with HEADCLEANERS, DISARM and Swedish Käng. The same political content than their previous output, a fresh and sharp look at contemporary world affairs somehow missed in current punk. Blood on Your Boots was written and performed by Bryan Suddaby, and recorded and mixed by J. Fidler. Like previous releases it comes housed in a pocket sleeve designed by Mylo “Mangel” Oxlo and includes a lyric insert.
BOOTLICKER “Who Do You Serve?” 7" (Warthog Speak Records)
Second 7” of catchy DIS-ish hardcore jabs from the grime-tasing British Columbians of BOOTLICKER. The UK82-meets-DISCHARGE-meets- TOTALITÄR results in gear not unlike recent heavies like BLOODKROW BUTCHER. Catch BOOTLICKER at 2018 Not Dead Yet festival in Toronto. 350 copies on Black, 120 on Green Marble, 40 Gray Marble. Co-released with Televised Suicide in Australia.
JELLICOE & Woodbury "Fear b/w Doubt" 7" (Quality Control HQ)
These back to back belters reference the style of hardcore punk that calls out in bloody protest, harkening Insane Youth’s ‘Not Give a Damn’ and Anti-Cimex’s ‘Scandinavian Jawbreaker’. The dogs snarl without mercy or respite offering soaring solos, a bleak outlook, a big bass tone and pummelling drums. Over exhilarating guitar density and hoarse bark, Jellicoe and Woodbury chase, dismantle, and advocate obliteration of mankind. Jellicoe and Woodbury are the twin dogs of Doubt and Fear, a poetic interpretation of James Joyce’s 'Ulysses', where dogs seemingly are ready to attack at any moment, based on Joyce’s well known fear of dogs. Doubt and Fear channel 'Ulysses' through a Bastard ‘Wind of Pain’ like lens. These self-created monsters use capitalism to keep us afraid to really move forward in life, and scared to connect with each other. They chase us back and 'breath down our neck’. Recorded in Toronto by some weathered but familiar statues in the Toronto punk community. To compliment the style, as well as the in depth and swirling world of these characters, legendary Japanese hardcore punk artist Sugi has manifested these two dramatic tracks for the front cover of the record. tless song writing. As noisy as the album is, all the songs are hits and hard to forget. 'The Total Arse', 'Tomorrow' and 'Consuming Shit and Mind Pollution' are what the new generation of noize-not-music punk lack, memorable anthems. Housed in a tip on sleeve for as long as they last and without alterations to the art or sound from the original, this reissue tries to bring an undoubtedly classic of our generation back to life..

NO STATIK "Mysterious To Ourselves" LP (Iron Lung Records)
The tumultuous and ever intense NO STATIK are back with 8 furious hardcore tracks and 3 deconstructed soundscapes dealing with the anxiety of feeling incomplete, forward movement and total chaos. We as people are never complete. Even when we die there are parts of ourselves and our lives that are left less refined that we would prefer. Sometimes we don't know where we are going or what the fuck is happening to us but every once in a while there are little indicators or even outside forces helping us to grow and to move along to the next stage. Life is ugly, sparse and bold. Let this LP be an indicator for you. A navigation point to help get through the mess and offer a sense of possible order and hope for the future. 300 copies on 150gr black vinyl housed in a 24pt reverse board jacket with hand made test films attached. Download included. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Greg Wilkinson. Art by Laíza Ferreira.
SERQET "Oleander" 7" (Vinyl Conflict Label)
TWO BRAND NEW SONGS BY SERQET FOLLOWING UP THEIR 2018 DEMO! Post Punk / Goth from Richmond VA - perfect blend of Peace Punk, Post Punk and a dash of Spacerock. Think The Mob, Thatcher on Acid, Hysteria Ward and Hawkwind. The list of ex-members is quite the roster, but Serqet stands on its own and is a must hear/see!
DEATH VALLEY GIRLS "Darkness Rains" LP (Suicide Squeeze Records)
At the core of Death Valley Girls, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Bonnie Bloomgarden and guitarist Larry Schemel channel a modern spin on Fun House’s sonic exorcisms, ZZ Top’s desert-blasted riffage, and Sabbath’s occult menace. On their third album Darkness Rains, Death Valley Girls churn out the hypercharged scuzzy rock every generation yearns for, but there is a more subversive force percolating beneath the surface that imbues the band with an exhilarating cosmic energy. Album opener “More Dead” is a rousing wake up call, with a hypnotic guitar riff and an intoxicating blown-out solo underscoring Bloomgarden’s proclamation that you’re “more dead than alive.” The pace builds with “(One Less Thing) Before I Die”, a distillate of Detroit’s proto-punk sound. At track three, Death Valley Girls hit their stride with “Disaster (Is What We’re After)”, a rager that takes the most boisterous moments off Exile On Main Street and injects it with Zeppelin’s devil’s-note blues. Darkness Rains retains its intoxicating convocations across ten tracks, climaxing with the hypnotic guitar drones and cult-like chants of “TV In Jail On Mars”.
MAXIMUMROCKNROLL #426 - Nov. 2018 (MRR)
Yippee-Ki-Yay, pardner! It’s another rootin’ tootin’ issue of Maximum Rocknroll, hot off the presses! It’s MRR #426, the November 2018 issue, where our cover features Fresno’s FATTY CAKES AND THE PUFF PASTRIES, who bless us all with their feminist gold. Inside, Seattle’s CASUAL HEX discuss their love of checkerboard (and how that relates to ska), Richmond’s GUMMING love pop and country music, and Portland’s LAVENDER FLU are a bunch of Deadheads—but don’t worry, these are all punk bands! Internationally, Germany’s ATMEN, WEITER… are a bunch of provocateurs, WARWOUND want you to know they’re not a cover band, and the Je Me Souviens label is doing its best to represent an overlooked segment of Quebec’s punk history. Speaking of labels, we’ve got an in-depth interview with New York’s ever/never, and if you crave more non-band content, you’re gonna love reading Bay Area author Soup discussing his latest book, Mombasa Radio Radio, and how his schizophrenia played a part in its creation. Plus we’ve got Miami’s ANTIFACES repping their overlooked scene and Baltimore’s SYRINGE on fighting bigotry and working towards representation in theirs. Still not enough for you? Seems a little greedy, but okay, fine, we’ll also keep delivering the best reviews and columns in the biz. So what are you waiting for, cowboy? Order your copy today!
