New Titles in the Webstore for April 25, 2019:
HARAM "Where Were You On 9/11?" 7" (Toxic State Records)
Latest 7” from NYC hardcore punk band Haram on Toxic State Records. Where Were You On 9/11? sees the band tightening up their sound from their previous LP into their most direct and devastating set of songs yet. Highly recommended.
PINOCCHIO "S/T" 7" (Toxic State Records)
"The shape of punk would seem malleable, as would explain the designations of all the sub-genres and the “true heads” incessantly denoting its death way back when. But one iteration we haven’t seen too much of, is the one taken by NYC outfit Pinocchio, who just released their debut 7” EP via Toxic State Records. I first saw them open for the Murderer LP release at Union Pool (and now they’re apparently opening for fucking BIKINI KILL in June), and I remember standing, mouth agape, half smiling like some kid watching The Matrix for the first time. Fronted by none other than Mary Jane Dunphe (VEXX, CC DUST, The County Liners), there lies a playful turbulence at the base of these eight songs. Some are paired in Vol.1 / Vol. 2, vaguely resembling one another, but they all contain the impish glee of the dovetailed mock-laughter on opener “MY TIME VOL.1” and closer “YOUR TIME.” And this is not to say this joviality is all there is to this album, this band, like some fucking kid’s joke. Italian folklore name or not, it’s still punk music…it’s still rife with speed and passion and indignation. “LIGHT SPEED VOL. 1” goes at the rate its title suggests, Dunphe’s vicious screams grounding everything, like what you might hear falling out of a window at a New Year’s Eve party. Its Second Volume carries that fury, that unease, demonic howls and breakneck rhythms. There’s ONE song over two minutes-long, middleman “Behind You,” its no-nonsense main riff simultaneously shaking at your feet and crawling over the rest of your body like some unidentifiable bugs conjured during a bad trip. And “Trick Plane” has virtually two songs in its 1:31 lifespan, a feat in itself, with a wholly new theme being introduced a minute in, and you wish it would go on for double the length goddamn it’s so good. As quickly as it enters and exits your life, so much has happened by its end, and it’s already high time for another spin. Wow." - earstofeed.com
GAI "Rock N Roll History Fuck Off" Lp (Fanclub Release)
Japanese punk/HC 1981-1985! ltd to 198 copies, stickered center labels, double sided insert, on Gai Best Punk Band records, (fanclub) import from Brazil. This LP collects the Extermination 7" Flexi, Damaging Noise Tape, Violent Party Omnibus Tape tracks, and "Pinch and Ouch" compilation tracks!
ENZYME "Howling Mind" LP (La Vida Es Un Mus)
After two 7″s on Crust War and Hardcore Victim and a Tour flexi in Japan on Vox Populi Records, Australian noise-punx Enzyme release their debut 10 track debut album. The band made up of ex members of PISSCHRIST, KROMOSOM and UNKNOWN TO GOD worship at the altar of Perdition era DISORDER, CHAOS UK and CONFUSE. The bass drives the sound, the drums hectic with a lot of rolling tom tom work whilst the guitar has an immense tone of buzzing distortion and flanged psychedelics which sits somewhere between GLOOM and LES RAZILLES DENUDES. Pummeling, assertive one-two hardcore with a visceral-physical without stupidity, clever but unpretentious venomous vocals. Recorded by Jason Fuller at Goatsound and mastered by Shige at Noise Room Howling Mind comes with sleeve and 16 page booked designed by Zach Malakonas.
POWER TRIP "Opening Fire: 2008-2014" LP (Dark Operative)
To commemorate 10 years as a band, Dark Operative is proud to present “Opening Fire: 2008-2014,” a complete collection of Power Trip’s earliest non-LP output. The release documents the self-titled 7”, “This World” (from “The Extermination Vol: 2” LP compilation on Flatspot Records), “Hammer of Doubt” (2010 version from “America’s Hardcore” LP compilation on Triple B Records), and the entirety of “The Armageddon Blues Sessions.” All tracks have been lovingly remastered by the band’s longtime producer Arthur Rizk with the release being rounded out by stunning artwork from Portland illustrator Matt Stikker.
GUTTER KNIFE "Boots on the Ground" LP (Quality Control HQ)
The chalky white and golden brown of the rows and rows of houses, sodden from an eternity of days on the Brighton seaside. The disconnected punctuation of hobnail boots on wet tarmac. Hardcore punk, handed the UK82 marching orders and sent to the frontlines of the war 86 Mentality started, with Arms Race and Violent Reaction keeping the home fires burning. The same grey walls inside which you can redefine and rebuild. The NOW Wave of British Hardcore. Wide and crooked vocals over riffs that move in and out of the speed and aggression of early HC and the inclination to get drunk and grab someone. Not quite a pogo, yet not quite a slam, with finer clobber and and the necessary swagger. Like a knife, but from the gutter. - Jonah Falco, Fucked Up/Career Suicide
FRAME OF MIND "Irieshun" LP (Quality Control HQ)
The UK’s Frame of mind are a band pushing sonic limitations atypically associated with hardcore, with the release of their debut album 'Irieshun' on Quality Control HQ Records. As with their Demo in 2016, and 'Weight of Two' EP the following year on The Essence Records, you are getting raw punk aggression, but also a rare soulful spirit, with lyrics encouraging an inward thinking outlook. The word ‘irieshun’ is Patois for ‘appreciation’, expressing praise towards something or someone, a rare feeling in an increasingly chaotic world. This release however invites you to do just that with souring melodies and complex song-writing lifting you up. Oli McVean’s lyrics harken back to a time when hardcore breathed a new and refreshing positive anger into youth culture, and the possibilities for the movement seemed endless. The foundations of this record give a shout out to late 80s NYHC bands that defied the mould of their time... Underdog, Absolution and Crumbsuckers. However, combining this with inspiration from prog rock, hip hop & reggae - Frame of Mind create something which is truly new.
STATE FUNERAL "Built for Destruction" 7" (Static Shock Records)
The Brighton bag-head boys are back to finally follow up their 2016 demo ‘Tory Party Prison’. Not straying far from the NWOBHC blueprint of NY83 and classic UK Oi sounds, Built For Destruction is a brick through your living room window, and it’s screaming Britain’s fucking burning mate! Snotty southern vocals that bring to mind DEAD MANS SHADOW, scrapping with brash guitars and thumping beats that kick and punch like THE ABUSED, while keeping the raw intensity that THE INSANE captured so perfectly when the Tories were picking this country apart piece by piece the last time round. Housed in a sleeve depicting a harsh modern reality with an image that burns into your retina, stating exactly what STATE FUNERAL are shouting about - there’s still no future.
DISGUISE "Bas Fada" 7" (Static Shock Records)
Almost four years since the 'Signs Of The Future' 12", Dublin's DISGUISE return with 'Bas Fada'. Six more extremely violent and blown out tracks that sound like the best of Scandinavian and Japanese hardcore punk thrown into a concrete mixer. Ever wondered what was on the other side of that enormous slammed door? Here's your answer. Recorded by the band themselves at the Karate Klub, then mixed by Jonah Falco and mastered at Noise Room Tokyo.
S.H.I.T. "Beat Sessions Vol. 7" Tape (Shout Recordings)
Six tracks from Toronto badboyz S.H.I.T. recorded live in 2018!
MARBLED EYE "Beat Sessions Vol. 8" Tape (Shout Recordings)
Seven tracks recorded Live on January 19th, 2019 at The Golden Beat
WORLD, THE "Reddish" LP (Lumpy Records)
Finally more from THE WORLD. The group that revived Groovy Post Punk a few years back and inspired a few dozen other Rough Trade sounding acts. Rhythm in the front seat, which would make the guitar the giant eyelashes above the headlights. That's right they're from Cali not Kingston. If you're addicted to ESG or Delta 5 maybe you can ween off with The World. "The sound of yesterday, today, and tomorrow" -paraphrasing someone important
MAZE "S/T" LP (Lumpy Records)
Japan's MAZE debut 12" gives a dewey feeling. It's Rainy post punk nice for a walk or a drive on a bleak sunned day. It's real hands in pocket music, like that mellow Big in Japan material. But also sounds like Altered Images. An upper and a downer at the same time. aMAZEing.
PROTRUDERS "Poison Future" LP (Feel It Records)
"After four self-released cassettes, Montréal's premier art-punk/neo-proto-punk band Protruders makes its vinyl debut with a 25-minute 12-inch of very groovy sounds. The sound is a bit clearer and maybe a little beefier—some of the noise gives way to a more relaxed and expansive approach. The psych quotient is higher. But the heart of the band is still beating for the sort of raw open-minded non-generic punk that once came from the likes of Rocket From The Tombs, Swell Maps, Dead Moon, Dancing Cigarettes, etc. “Fruit Hang” has a perfect mid-70s style garage feel—like a Boston pre-punk band tearin’ it up at the Rat! This could be the hit, kidz! Skronky sax gives “Hydrophytol” a kinda Hawkwind/no-wave feel. And dig “No Stone”—a slower one, catchy as hell—I swear it could pass for an outtake from the Saints circa 1978. Solid—another hit! At five minutes, the title track stretches things out a bit. This one has a definite Ubu/Voidoids vibe—nasty angular spazz-punk with a little more sax blat added. Very nice guitar stuff happening here. We get some weirdo HC action on “Stabilizer” and more hot guitar squiggles. “Tax 101” is maybe a “typical” Protruders song—that means good! “Wrong Way Sign,” pushes things over the six-minute mark, with a strong psych-punk feel (Wipers?) and some totally swell rock-jam stuff at the end. Wow. This record is a significant step for the band and an impressive way to start their vinyl career as they gain the higher visibility they deserve. Most excellent!" -Eddie Flowers (Vulcher Magazine/The Gizmos)
ATTACK SS "Welcome to Deathdust Island" LP (Distort Reality Records)
18 previously released tracks and 1 unreleased track compiled from various past releases between 2006 - 2013! No Boss 7", No Nukes 7", Frenzy split 7", V/A What A Hell Fukushima Cd, V/A Terro-Rhythm #7 Cd, V/A Noise Of Mind!! Vol. 2 Cd, V/A Hakai Idenshi Cd. Intense Noise Punk from Okazaki, Japan!
TSOL "Dance With Me" LP (Dink Records)
The first in a series of classic vinyl re-issues featuring original artwork painstakingly restored and with areas hot-stamped with gold foiling, Dance With Me was the first album by Long Beach punk band T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty). Originally released on Frontier Records in 1981, the album hasn’t been available since 2007 when it was re-issued by The Offspring’s Nitro Records. Other uber-fans include Guns N’ Roses (Steven Adler was wearing a T.S.O.L. t-shirt in the Sweet Child o’ Mine video). Dance With Me saw the band move away from the hardcore punk roots of their debut EP released earlier in the year and the music became more melodic and goth-tinged as did the lyrics. The album was recorded by Thom Wilson (Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, The Offspring) and the cover featured paintings by Mark Wassman and photos by Glen E. Friedman.
CRUCIFIX "S/T" LP (Kustomized Records)
Reissue of 1981’s classic first recording by legendary San Francisco band Crucifix. This EP’s raw Sabbath-fueled punk, Shaggs-like musicianship and honest teenage angst provoked one reviewer at the time to write, “it makes you feel like going out and bludgeoning an old lady to death.” Recorded at Tom Mallon Studios in San Francisco in 1981, and originally released on Universal Records, this long out-of-print five track EP contains the band’s defining anthem of the period, “You’re Too Old.”
ANTI-CIMEX "1983-1984" Tape (Fanclub Release)
Swedish d-beat legends at their most raw and intense era. Contains both raging 7"s "Raped Ass" and "Victims of a Bombraid", comes with double-sided insert, bonus j-card and sticker.
HEADCLEANERS "The Infection Grows" Tape (Fanclub Release)
Also known as Huvudtvätt, this is the raging 1983 7" EP from this Swedish hardcore punk band. J-card is high quality reproduction of the original Pushead artwork from 7" sleeve. Comes with lyric insert.
MOBS "Projection of Astral Body" Tape (Fanclub Release)
Raw and creepy Japanese punk, their 1985 7" EP. Comes with large fold-out double-sided insert, including reproduction of poster from original EP on one side.
CONMEN "Get Loose" Tape (Wallride Records)
Bop along with Boston's the CONMEN's newest LP, on cassette! Chuck this bad boy in your sand-caked boom box on a sunny summer day, or slide it into your Hi-Fi for a rainy night in. Either way, you're getting smashed in the face with eleven pop tracks of delicious '77 style rock. Delectably simplistic, refreshingly recognizable, and pleasantly abrasive, no one's "Too Tough to Dance" to this heater.
NIGHT FORCE "S/T" 7" (Quality Control HQ)
Debut 7" from this German/Belgian/Danish powerhouse hardcore punk unit from Mannheim, Germany. The 7" sounds as mystical as the demo with tasteful use of chorus pedal to give off an almost UK goth punk guitar sound ala Deformed expertly blended with hardcore rhythms which at times give off Omegas style catchy vibes. Featuring members of Domain, True Vision and Arms Race.
FARCE Demo Tape (Quality Control HQ)
FARCE understand and navigate the troughs and gutters scarred in to the landscape of hardcore punk. Lessons of brevity and pain which the haiku's of Stoke-on-Trent taught us 36 years ago, grafted on to the 57 seconds-or-so it takes to be forced into a vortex of hurdling speed and twisted mass. The sound of a putrid bark of hope in a world which was once decaying to its detriment, and is now revitalized to near extinction. - Jonah Falco
BLIND AUTHORITY "Death Dreams" Tape (Quality Control HQ)
New and last release by one of the foundations of NWOBHC. London based crew that riff like no other will have these tunes in your head for days. Expect elements of Neglect and Cold As Life.
